Japandi Minimalism

The main room of this apartment is small and had to work as two: a living and dining space, and the main bedroom. To divide the space I built a shelving unit across the room with a pivotable TV panel - from the sofa on one side, from the bed on the other, one screen for both. The sleeping area ends up properly separate, and nothing feels closed in: light still runs through the shelves from one end to the other. The second bedroom stayed a bedroom, and the family uses it as the children's room.

Everything else stays quiet so that the move can work. Japandi is easy to do coldly, so I kept it warm: white walls, pale oak, linen and grasscloth, a bed on a raised oak platform, long fabric cylinders instead of bedside lamps, terracotta chairs at a round white table. The rule holds everywhere and breaks exactly twice - sage-green walls in the entrance, green glazed tiles in the bathroom.
